Wartime memories in sketches and song

An account of war through the eyes of a Northumbrian child has inspired a dramatic commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.
Warkworth Drama Group decided to join in victory celebrations and while searching for inspiration on the Internet stumbled across Ashington woman Jan Stokoe's memories of the war as a seven-year-old.

Her heart-warming stories led producers Meg and Mike Dixon to put together a show called Some Sunny Day telling the story of the war and illustrating it with songs and sketches, using Mrs Stokoe's memories to give a human touch to events.

Coincidentally Mrs Stokoe not only still lives in the area but attends a creative writing group with another member of the drama group.

The drama group will welcome Mrs Stokoe and her husband Peter with complimentary tickets to the show, which runs tomorrow and Saturday at Warkworth Memorial Hall at 7.30pm.

As well as personal experiences of the war, actors from the group will perform songs by Vera Lyn, Marlene Dietrich, Flanagan and Allan and George Formby and comedy sketches from the Ovalteenies and It's That Man Again, while a narrator describes how the war unfolded.

In keeping with the story telling delivery of the show, seating will be around tables and wine will be available at the bar.

Tickets are £5 and are available from N&F Young, Amble and Warkworth Post Offices or on the door.

Warkworth Drama Group has been putting on shows since the 1970s and members describe themselves as an 'enthusiastic bunch of like minded thespians who enjoy the smell of grease paint and the roar of the crowd'.
